Ratatat / Classics

This August sees the release of the my favorite instrumental electronic by way of hip-hop artists sophomore album, I'm talking about Ratatat and their new album Classics. Last year this was on my list of most anticipated albums of 2006 (more of a mental list topped by the Flaming Lips). So with this album spreading around the internet the last two days (along with the new mountain goats) I had to get me a piece. How can I mention Ratatat with out mentioning that ass kicker of track Seventeen Years. It moved some heads. You'd have to hate music not to like it...or something close to that. That track got me into their albums and then their mixtape, which volume 2 of should be available this year. My personal highlight of volume 1 was the Ghostface track Run, it was already a track I dug but they just one upped it to another level.

The new album features a wider array of instruments including acoustic guitar, slide guitar, sleigh bells and cello in addition to the usual suspects, guitars and synths. More importantly though after listening to the album, they seemed to have refined their production skills.

So new album out on XL recordings on August 22nd and new mixtape probably available at their shows.

Ratatat - Lex [from Classics]
Ratatat - Run (Ghostface remix) [From Ratatat Mixtape Vol. 1]
Ratatat - Seventeen Years [From Ratatat]

Forgive Ratatat their soundtracky innocuousness. sportsbook People love this band's M83-on-Wellbutrin sound for its one great gimmick-- multiple styles of music mashed together under digital anesthesia and performed with waiting room Muzak primness. bet nfl They're the Urban Outfitters of recorded sound: everything chewed up, fed through a ringer, or otherwise digested, and handed down two years later to the kids as avant and edgy. Wham, bam, 4.2.
Except Ratatat complicate things by busting mad hooks. "Seventeen Years", "El Pico", and "Breaking Away" from their self-titled debut were all anthemic and new-sounding enough to hold ears through the album's filler. casino online Those songs hinted at great heights (never reached) and profound depth (never plumbed to). Listeners probably wouldn't have been so patient if Evan Mast and Mike Stroud weren't expert programmers, indulging in pretty atmospherics that they seldom dared http://www.enterbet.com disturb with industrious tempos or outsize dynamics.

Mike Stroud and Evan Mast first met as students at Skidmore College, but they did not work together until they recorded several songs under the name "Cherry" in 2001. Their 2004 debut, Ratatat, was written and recorded in Mast's Crown Heights, Brooklyn apartment on Stroud's PowerBook.[1] The album is entirely instrumental with the exception of vocal excerpts at the beginning and end of selected tracks. The group debuted by releasing the single Seventeen Years on Evan and his brother E*Rock's record label Audio Dregs in the US and Rex Records in the UK. They then signed for XL Recordings, releasing their debut album and the single Germany to Germany. Ratatat occasionally remixes others for collected release on Ratatat Remixes Vol. 1 (which garnered the attention of Rolling Stone), as well as the later second volume, both of which were self-released in co-operation with Audio Dregs.
