Cut faster

School has started once again and all is fresh and new. This is the best part of the semester because I haven't gotten to that stage where I hate the class and hate going but I force yourself to go. In my opinion all classes should be done in the style of summer school where you have 5 weeks to learn a subject and you take two classes a month. Atleast I learn better that way when I have the same class everyday.

I've been listening to some Mix Master Mike from the Beastie Boys, its my morning music.

Mix Master Mike - Tranzmission
Mix Master Mike - Schwartz Via Aghaar
Mix Master Mike - Suprize Packidge [Remix]
Beastie Boys - Shadrach (Joey Chaves remix)

I was stumbling around couple of dex's and found this Reggie and the Full Effect live footage from Easter where the band dressed up like rabbits.

Reggie and the Full Effect - Girl Why'd You Run Away (live video)

Also I found Death From Above 1979 doing Romantic Rights on Conan with Max Weinberg. I watched the begining and kind of started looking away then I looked again and Max Weinberg jumped in and started playing drums in the band. Crazyness.

IE fix

I finally got around to fix this site for Internet Explorer since it was a trainwreck for the past few months. I never use the browser very often, it got bumped down to 3rd string browser so it was easy to forget that it looked the way it did with the sidebar fonts. But all is fixed, it was all just my lame html skills which I corrected. The site still looks weird on IE but its looks perfect on Mozilla Firefox. I might change few things to make things more sexy but other than that things are going to be pretty much the same.

Pit Er Pat

I was listening to the new Pit Er Pat, 3d message EP and I'm slightly disappointed but not completely. It has their trademark sound but the songs seems like they were put together really quickly. I haven't gotten my hands on Shakey, their debut album on Thrill Jockey but I did find few tracks from that which caught my attention.

Pit Er Pat consists Butchy Fuego on drums, the classically-trained piano skills of Fay Davis-Jeffers and bassist Rob Doran. They hail from Chicago and carry that city in their sound.

The EP features four songs and lasts 15 minutes, it was recorded on their last tour at John McEntire’s Soma Studios.

Pit Er Pat - Hey, Old Man
Fay Davis-Jeffers sounds like Emily Haines from Metric. from 3d message ep
Pit Er Pat - Gated Community
from Shakey
Pit Er Pat - Underwater Wave Game from Shakey

I might be late jumping on the Death From Above 1979 boat but I've been rocking this track all week long;

King of the Hill & amanset

  • DALE: So it turns out I'm not the actual Dale Gribble, but a clone of him. The original Dale Gribble is a super-warrior from the year 2087. The second me, i.e. I, was created to help the first me fight the invading Mongol armies.
  • HANK: Dale, that's asinine, and here's four reasons why. First, you're not gonna clone a super-warrior out of a guy who can't even win a thumb-wrestling match. Two, you've spent your life swearing that the robots will eliminate the clones by the year 2010, so which is it, robots or clones? Three, you've already said you sympathize with the invading Mongolians of 2087, so you'd be the last one they'd send to fight them. And four, if you were from the future, you would have seen this coming. (Punches Dale in the arm)

King of the Hill is suppose to take place in an imaginary North Texas city called Arlen which would be around where I have been living for 20 some odd years. Coincidently I grew up in Allen, which sounds very similar to Arlen. I want to say that the show doesn't represent North Texas but that wouldn't be true, it represents a large portion of the population... not everyone.

Speaking of Texans, here are couple of American Analog Set tracks ;

Hold On

I'm really digging the new Minus Story as I mentioned previously. Its one of my favorites of this year, its worth picking up. I had this song stuck in my head all day which makes it worthy of a post.

Minus Story - Hold On

I would never thought I would ever hear a band as big as the Foo Fighters cover a Jawbreaker song but alas it has been done. Jawbreaker opened for Foo Fighters ages ago when they were still together in the mid 90s. I always thought the Foo Fighters might of been fans of Jawbreaker, which this song confirms. This is one of my favorites by Jawbreaker, a true classic only initially released on a compilation, covered by the Foo Fighters on the Best of You single.

Foo Fighters - Kiss The Bottle (Jawbreaker Cover!)

I think the vocals are too nice guy for this song.

Friends of P

I'm still moving around, not staying in one place and doing a lot of driving. This whole weekend I never really had much time with my computer and have couple of albums to still listen to. I did however finally get a hold of Minus Stories, No Rest for Ghosts and its very excellent and worth checking out.

I'm still wondering if I should pre-order John Vanderslices Pixel Revolt, I know I'm going to get it but I'm not sure how I'm going to approach doing that. I can't stop listening to Peacocks in the video rain from the album, still available one the sidebar at Travelers Diagram.

I still have to give the new Kanye West, new Fruit Bats, the last one by Do Make Say Think, an Extra Glens album and 11 others a listen to. I think this week I can make my way through those.

Some other quick notes;

Saturday!

I can't type too well today because I messed up my finger last night with some hallway football so I'll keep this post short. I've been lazying around all day and listening to some Daniel Johnston tunes. He's been putting out music for about 20 years or so and is a great Texas songwriter. Here are a few of my favorites;

Also I've been rocking the new Holopaw all day too, I wasn't a fan of the last album from what I heard but this one is great;
Sub pop's got a crazy Chad VanGaalen animated video worth checking out.

Anticipation 7 inch

I've had this laying around for a while and it always makes it back into my music rotation every once in a while. Spoon released this 7inch in 1998 titled Anticipation and is now available on its second pressing for only $4.

Originally released in 1998 on black vinyl this 7" has been reissued by Mag Wheel Records in Toronto. Limited release of 770 on clear red vinyl! Two perfect hook driven songs unavailable on any other release. A slice of Spoon's history available again

Real quick

My lame ISP had its port reset for the year or something like that so I haven't had internet for a while. It should of been a half day thing but it turned into few days. I haven't been able to check up on my daily blogs and webpages to see what going on in the world but this down time has given me time to catch back up on my music collection.

I'm pretty excited about the new Grandaddy album coming out and I'm loving the EP. I like the new direction the band is taking with the sound, I wasn't a big fan of the direction they were going on their last LP Sumday, I think it was the production.

Grandaddy - pull the curtains
Grandaddy - Stray Dog and the Chocolate Shake

Atmosphere has some tour dates and he's coming by Dallas. Check out all the dates here

I like the write up Aversion did about Puff Daddy changing his name again. I don't think its lame. How cool is it that whenever you feel like changing your alias you get all this publicity. I go through atleast one new alias every other month and you don't here anyone talking about it. I think he does it because he can and because people pay attention.

Looks like I'm getting kicked off this computer so thats that.

Lord Quas

I just saw the craziest video by Madlibs alias Lord Quas (Quasimoto) on ifilms.

Bullies beware! Lord Quas trips through a hip-hop wonderland. Inspired by the psychedelic underground comics of the '60s and '70s, a spongy, brick-throwing anarchist races to confront his ultimate nemesis.Groovy old-skool vibe and stylee

Check it out on iFilms: Quasimoto: Bully's Hit(2005)

Some of you might remember Madlib from the production end of Madvillains with MF Doom on vocals and from Jaylib sharing production and vocal duties with Jay Dee (J.Dilla). Also Yesterdays New Quintet, his Madlib releases.

Madlib - Starvation
Yesterdays New Quintet - That Girl
Straight up jazzy

If you live in the Atlanta area MF Doom is playing a live show which is rare. Catch him while/when you can, this guy barely does live gigs.

MF Doom - Hyssop I highly recomend these two Doom tracks if that means anything
De La Soul Feat MF Doom - Rock Co.Kane Flow

Random RJD2
RJD2 - The Horror
Why not some RJD2 to add some flavor.
RJD2 - Ghostwriter RJD2 at his best IMO, classy tune all the way.
RJD2 - Making the Days Longer

New American Analog Set

Its about time I got my hands on some new American Analog Set. After their label shut down the amanset shopped the album around and found a home at Arts & Crafts, home of The Broken Social Scene who also have a highly anticipated album coming out soon. Here is a track from the new album Set Free from one of Texas' best American Analog Set called Born on the Cusp

Two weeks

I have two weeks of vacation with no big plans, I'm just going to lazy around for a while just because I can. Maybe I can do some of the things I've been meaning to do like figure out whats wrong with this page on IE, sell some stuff on Amazon, and most importantly configure my fantasy football team. I didn't really have any intentions of setting a team up but I had few drinks and came in to my place to pass out one night and saw a commercial for it on ESPN, for some reason I thought it would be the coolest thing ever. Few days later I checked my email and it said I registered for it. It shouldn't be that lame, in high school one of our classes was taught by a coach and he thought we should all have a fantasy football team because he couldn't come up with a whole days lesson plan and half the football team was in the class. Throw in playing some basketball, video games and late nights and you have the conclusion to my 2 week vacation.

I'm posting right now away from my usual station on a very slow connection without any of my bookmarks. Not to worry dear readers, posts will be regular with few holes here and there but who's perfect.

Revoltution in the Head has a nice Elliott Smith Cover album where Elliott Smith covers other artists. It's worth a download if you're a fan.

Some random sounds that have been on rotation;

Of Montreal - Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)
Dios Malos - A**hole (beck cover)
Calexico - Love will tear us apart

Perseid

Here is a little heads up for those of you who are going to be up late tomorrow (Aug 12) or up early Saturday, the Perseid meteor shower should be visable in the NE sky. Here is a little what, when and where for you. Last meteor shower I saw 13+ meteors while driving and on my patio without any equipment other than my eyes.

Mountain Goats - The Stars Fell On Alabama

Broken Social Scene

You can find the new single by The Broken Social Scene called 7/4 (shoreline)here.

Aesop

Razorblade Runner has a great Aesop Rock track worth checking out called Facemelter. I wasn't always an Aesop Rock fan, it took a few listens to get me into him. What got me to keep on listening was the great production. My favorite release by Aesop Rock is Labor days with production by El-P and Blockhead, I'm pretty sure I've posted a track from that on here before. He has a lyrical style that you just can escape....

"New York MC Aesop Rock released his most potent combination of words and music on his Def Jux debut. Crammed with references to history and mythology, as well as the usual pop-culture name checks, Aesop's lyrics remain unusually verbose and intelligent here, but he's also able to spin them into compelling stories". --AMG

Aesop Rock - Daylight

Aesop Rock - Battery
Aesop Rock - Water (YSI link) This is definitely worth your effort to download.

I Remember

I finally got a hold of that new Animal Collective album Feels. I like their previous effort a lot so I have high hopes for this release. I have no opinion on it because I got it few minutes ago and I'm only 2 minutes into the first track as I type right now. Sounds good from what I hear right now. You can't beat song titles like Flesh Canoes. They did however recently release an EP with folk legend Vashti Bunyan, here is a track from that EP release;

Animal Collective And Vashti Bunyan - I Remember Learning How To Dive

Animal Collective Live @ Fatcat Brighton Festival Show June 2002
Animal Collective Live @ the Old Market Brighton April 2004

Summer Nightmares is the title of this mix I found online. Check out track four, its a classy little number.

I'm doing this post in the middle of writting my final paper, with the internet, music and x-files I just can't concentrate for more than 20 mins but slowly and surely I'm almost complete. Actually I did this post just so that I could hide a link for my presentation tomorrow. Can you find it?

Minders

I've had this song by The Minders stuck in my head all day, Yeah Yeah Yeah from Horrary for Tuesdays. If I remember correctly this song was written by the bass guitarist who only wrote few songs for the band. The band has had a Decemberist and a Jick and members of at least 4 other bands pass through its line up.

Two versions of the song
The Minders - Yeah Yeah Yeah
The Minders - Yeah Yeah Yeah (other version)(follow the link)-- this is my favorite version

Indie Pop from Magicmarker Records

Boycrazy - Stark Street
Indie pop with male/female vocals out on Magicmarker Records
Best Friends Group - Free Man I found this while looking for the Minders tune, the clarinet caught my attention at first listen.
Tullycraft - Twee
she said hey hey hey / won't you listen to me / well you can keep the punk rock ska rap beats and house/ f**k me i'm twee
Gazetteers - Bedroom community Nice guy boy indie pop.
The Owls - Air This is my favorite (the) Owls song. There is Owls and there is The Owls...this is the "The" band with female vocals.
Galactic Heros - Coffee More indie pop with some good accompaniment.
Galatic Heros - Cherokee Indie pop

Freeway Blogger

I found some amusing and entertaining pictures of freeway free speech on this site called Freeway Blogger; Lots to look at in the visitors gallery also.

HWM

If I ever wanted to listen to anything that really rocks I could always count on a Hot Water Music track to get me there. I hadn't paid much attention to them in few years and then I heard they were breaking up. The remaining members have started another band called The Draft and have written songs and played a show or two. Since I heard about the break up, HWM have made frequent visits into my music rotation lately. I must say though their later stuff didn't really do it for me as much as their earlier material.

Hot Water Music - Moonpies for MisfitsThe bass guitar really makes this song.
Hot Water Music - Turnstile
Hot Water Music - Paper Thin
Hot Water Music - Trusty Chords

They always had nice album art done by Scott Sinclair, for most or their releases.

Saturday looks good

Apparently this is an artists rendition of how star looks like when its being formed according to NASA but what do they know?

I was browsing the SXSW page for some mp3s and found some interesting stuff. I didn't even finish looking through the large list of songs and bands but here is some stuff that got my attention.

Saturday Looks Good To Me - When The Party Ends

Enon - Kanon
Earlimart - The Hidden Track
The National - All The Wine
Calla - Televise
Dirty on Purpose - Mind Blindness
The Panda Band - Eyelashes
The High Dials - Desiderata
Voxtrot - Missing Pieces
The Oranges Band - Ok Apartment
Apostle of Hustle - Folkloric Feel

Friday

One more week left of school which incedentally is the hardest week. It cool though after that I have 10 hours of classes and I'll be finished with school...yay. Now figuring out what I'm going to do afterwards is the hardest part. I'm sure I'll find something to pay the bills and support my rock and roll lifestyle.

This page is worth checking out. You might find an album in there that you want.

OYA

If you didn't download the Ogre You Asshole EP I posted on June I think its worth your effort. I don't like to post the same thing again but I like their music that much. Sure the vocals are in Japanese but damn can they rock. Also to be noted I'm liking those drums a lot.

OYA - Lobotomy This whole song is pretty good and has a nice formula to it but my favorite part is the chorus and when he does the ahaahaa ah @ 0:58 second mark. Also when they let the song bust open at 4:16 it reminds me of Modest Mouse before they (collectively) stopped doing drugs.

OYA - Kaisentou
If they were ever to release a single from the Demo EP I would think that this would be a good choice. I like the guitar riff and the vocals are not bad.

Mid week tunes

Eleven songs for your listening pleasure for this hot hot Texas summer.

Tarkio - Neapolitan Bridesmaid Colin Meloy of the Decemberists' old band
Will Ferrell - Afternoon Delight
Spoon - Revenge
Death Cab For Cutie - PhotoboothThe first DCFC song I fell for
Death Cab For Cutie - Title & Registration Just because I need to get my registration sticker done soon
Park Ave. - Cloak & Dagger

No Rest for Ghosts

One of my favorite bands is coming out with an album soon and I completely forgot. Then I randomly saw a song by them on sixeyes and liked it so I looked into it then it hit me. Minus Story's new album No Rest for Ghosts is coming out on October, 11 on Jagjaguar. I think some other blogs posted these tracks but if you haven't heard them they are worth checking out.

Minus Story - Knocking on Your Head
Minus Story - Little Wet Head

Minus Story - Time Wastes Itself From the Heaven and Hell EP released March of this year.

I have high hopes for these guys.

Random Comp.

Late posts are coming to be more common because of my schedule, I used to be at the helm of my computer early on in the day but my schedule now has me waking up and out the door before I have a chance to think but then I'm back at night and usually up pretty late. Also I've been in kind of a mood lately (about a month) that I just want to go to the webpages that I visit daily and then just zone out and listen to or play music. I don't meander as much as I used to. Its cool though, I always try to update daily and I will always have a piece of space on the web, ever since 98? 97? with various incarnations.

The weekend was a wild one though, my roommate was moving out so we partied pretty hard. There was one point in the night that afterwards I don't remember anything...clearly. I don't know how I got to my bed but I woke up there. Also I think I got hit on the side of my head... or I slept with my head on the remote.

  • I found this compilation called The Best of Drea 2004-2005, Vol. 1 & 2 hosted on the MIT server. Together its 36 tracks for your listening pleasure with sexy results. I'm guessing you can thank someone named Drea for putting it together. Music
  • Also you might find something you like here
I spoil you guys.

I've been cracking into older Death Cab and Nada Surf anticipating both their releases.

Nada Surf - If You Leave [cover]
