More Like The Moon

I don't know how I ever lived without my RSS feed reader. I used to have my daily routine of going to my favorite blogs and checking them all out for updates which was a hefty task. This tells me whats updated and even right when its updated. I couldn't find a quality RSS feed reader that didn't have a trial limit so I just downloaded my favorite and cracked it. Thats how they get you, you have it for 14 days and become dependent on it and then bam...they take it way. So now I pretty much read about 5 webpages and the RSS feed reader takes care of the rest. What will I do with all my extra my free time? Maybe this if I had $80 laying around.

Check it out, theirs lots to choose from here.

I've been listening to the More Like The Moon EP by Wilco a lot lately, it's one of my favorite Wilco releases. It was originally a bonus EP on the Austrailian release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (my favorite Wilco release). I hate the bonus tracks on releases with albums that aren't available everywhere (thank god for the internet). Why does, Japan, UK, or Austrailia deserve bonus material and I don't? Wilco were kind on that aspect and let people who bought the album download it for free by typing in the code on the back of the cd, which is how I got it. Its a must have for Wilco fans. The Eels are the only band that comes to mind that did an exclusive bonus disc just for the US on Souljacker.

2. Handshake Drugs
3. Woodgrain
4. A Magazine Called Sunset
5. Bob Dylan's 49th Beard

American Analog Set Demo(s)

I haven't heard this mentioned on the blog-o-sphere so I'm guessing not that many people realized it but the American Analog Set are offering demos from the newly release and very excellent album Set Free. They are starting in order with the tracklist of the album so Monday was the acoustic demo of Born on the Cusp.

Now the exactly what I just said with better detail:
Starting this week, and continuing every week through December, we are very pleased to offer you the demo versions of every song from our new album. In order. Each Monday, until we're done, we'll be offering you a new song. If we are a day or so late (which we will not be), please check back. We'll be on tour, you know?

Go get it here or

Young People

Since I finally found my Magnetic Fields Box set I've been listening to it in the background non-stop. I never really got into i but I think I need to give it another chance because I've never heard a Magnetic Fields album that I haven't gotten into.

Here's an nice live cover of the song by KoC.
The original classic
While looking for the Magnetic Fields song I found Bright Black, they have a lazy lazy folkish sound. Its porch sittin' music. Definitely

If Bright Black were more experimental, more rock and had a female lead singer I would think they would sounds similar to Young People, the band not the demographic.

A fascinating mix of rock, country, and avant-garde, the trio known as Young People formed in early 2001, when vocalist Katie Eastburn, guitarist Jeff Rosenburg, and drummer Jarrett Silberman began playing together in hopes of forming a country band and ended up forging together traditional American music with the freeform sensibilities of underground rock. - AMG

HSH

I was bumping around on the net and found out that Her Space Holiday has a new album out called The Past Presents the Future out on Wichita. I went to the HSH site and found three songs but I can't find my headphones to give them a listen.

After living in Austin for nearly three years, Marc Bianchi moved into a little house in the middle of nowhere in Northern California and began recording this release. In extreme isolation and creative re-evaluation, the content of Her Space Holiday's sound and meaning became much broader than previous works. Short stories starring characters have replaced short-sided, one person perspectives. Rather than feeling like you're looking into the life of one songwriter, the listener walks away with a sense of getting a deeper glimpse into the world around them.

Helicopter

I just saw the video for Helicopter by Bloc Party. I don't know how long the videos been out but its amazing. Its an animated video featuring pig-lizards and the guys from Bloc Party in a futuristic world. Its one of the best music videos I've seen in a while and is worth checking out.

Del

Hot damn, looks like Modest Mouse is reissueing their last album. I hate it when bands reissue albums so close after its initial release. I bought the album, I bought the previous album and both have been re-released, those bastards. I think the only new song is the b-side I got it all(most). I should be able to trade my original album in for the new. Maybe next time I'll just download the album and wait for the reissue to buy it. The Flaming Lips have that problem too with the Soft Bulletin and Yoshmi but I probably will purchase those reissue so I can listen to it in beautiful 5.1 surround sound. Plus it the Flaming Lips, how can I not.

Modest Mouse - I got it all(most) (Good news.... B-side)

Just Like the Fambly Cat

Its a pretty slow Wednesday, it seems like I should be doing something that I might of forgot to do. I filled in the day after classes viewing Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for the first time which was pretty good. But the rest of the day I plan on hanging out just cold chillin'.

Word on the street(internet) is the new David Banner album, Certified is pretty good. I don't really know much about David Banner other than he's a producer and he raps too. Pitchfork gave it a good review (8.4 out of 10)

David Banner - Westside

The new Oranger album, New Comes and Goes came out yesterday and from what I heard of it its not bad.

Oranger formed in early 1998 from the remains of Overwhelming Colorfast and American Sensei, and has quickly become one of the most prominent bands of the San Francisco music scene. Their heavy 60's pop sound combines melodic aspects of the Beach Boys and the Zombies with the fuzzed guitar and driving rhythums of Blue Cheer and The Who. - Amazon

Oranger - Crooked in the Weird of the Catacombs
Oranger - Crones

Some Grandaddy news, not really that important but they announced the title of the new LP, Just Like the Fambly Cat

Graham Coxon

All day I've been listening to an album I've had for a while but never got a chance to give it a thorough listen. I was reading about former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon somewhere last night and realized I had one of his album and gave it a listen before I went to bed. The first thing I thought when I woke up was I woke up late but the second thing I thought was wow that was a great album. Happiness in Magazines came out a few back so I'm sure the bloggers already tackled this one but it good enough to bring up again.

Graham Coxon - Bitterwseet Bundle Of Misery
Graham Coxon - Freakin Out
Graham Coxon - Bottom Bunk

I think lot of his stuff sounds like his former band Blur, even the vocals.

A little news on the new Graham Coxon album posted on his site 3 days ago;

Graham confirms that his new “sentimental, despondent, whiny, stingy, horrible” record is finally finished.. Read the details about the new one at Graham Coxon headquarters.

Oh yea, download the new Strokes single Juice Box at Donewaiting.com, while it last. I got it to reupload if YSI hits its limit on their, just give me a heads up.

Wrong Time Capsule

I only like few Deerhoof songs and one from those few is from the new album The Runners Four. One of my friends highly recomended it to me so I think I'll have to check out the whole album sometime.

Also the Deerhoof website gives a link to a nice collection of mp3s to download here.

Blackalicious is coming by Denton Wednesday and their is a small posse forming that want to head to that show so that should be a good show. The new album is pretty good, especially track 8, Side To Side.

Tonight I will know them by the trail of dead

The guys from Trail of Dead are on tour again, rumors are that they are going to be previewing new material. I wouldn't of known about it if I didn't go to their page because the Denton venue had nothing down for today. Apparently this is a four day Texas only tour kicking of a mile and a half from where I am in a small venue called Haileys and its only $10. I doubt it'll sell out but last time I tried seeing Trail of Dead on a Texas only tour it was put together in the last minute and the dates and venue was all mixed up and I couldn't go because I didn't know where to go but I tried. So tonight in one hour I shall be heading down to Denton Square to see Trail Of Dead at Haileys if they are infact playing there. If not I shall come back here listen to some Trail of Dead and imagine what could have been.

For all you lucky Texans;

09.14 -- Denton, TX - Hailey's - All Ages
09.15 -- Houston, TX - Mary Jane's FC - All Ages
09.16 -- Austin, TX - Emo's (outside) - All Ages
09.17 -- San Antonio, TX - White Rabbit - All Ages

The Cowboy Song

Before today I only knew two songs by Gomez, I liked them but never pursued anything else. Then two days ago I wanted to post one song by Gomez in honor of the Cowboys winning their first game of the season and stumbled on few more I liked. I always thought Gomez was one guy and his various friends making music, I guess its the vibe I got from the couple of songs I heard and maybe the name Gomez.

From their various releases:
Gomez - The Cowboy Song Oh yea the Cowboys kicked ass in the first game of the season, I hope this is a sign of good things to come for the rest of the season.
Gomez - Get Myself Arrested
Gomez - 78 Stone Wobble
Gomez - Tijuana Lady
Gomez - We haven't turned around
Gomez - In Our Gun

Hot

I had me quite the weekend. Not really, it was pretty much the same stuff I do every weekend. We celebrated my roomates birthday for 3 days and on the third day their was about 15 or so people over and our air condition stopped working. I think I might go out right now and go buy a fan for my room, I can't take this. I've been spoiled all this time and now this Texas summer heat has finally caught up to me.

You can have it so much better

Well Friday has come again and I'm sure I've got a fun filled weekend coming up. I've been battling this cold all week long and need some time to rest. It all started last weekend when I was standing outside and notice that it was raining ashes and I smelled smoke so I look up and noticed that my whole apartment complex was covered with a thick haze of smoke. Something was on fire across the street, which is still a mystery to me. I was breathing in that air and my throat was getting scratchy yada yada yada here I am four days later with a runny nose and a sinus headache and a cabinet full of expired meds. I think my immune system got caught off guard, he was in a bad place at the time.

Anyway enough about me. I heard that the new Franz Ferdinand leaked in the past few days. Well I didn't really hear about the leak as much as I'm listening to it right now. I'm not the biggest Franz Ferdinand fan, not that I hate their music its just I didn't bite into all the hype. Yea they make some nice music, it just doesn't move me as much as it seems to with everyone else. Also, whats with the titled of the new album, You Can Have It So Much Better With Franz Ferdinand, can I really have it so much better? Can I? On a postive note, they are better than most of the top 40 crap being released and I do like their ideals if that makes any sense.

Remixes;
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out (take Me Please Remix By Bebop)

Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV

Pinback consists of two core members Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV, both of them release albums apart from Pinback both before and after Pinbacks formation with different projects. The reason I wanted to do this post was because of Goblin Cock but I'll get back to that later.

Armistead Burwell Smith IV released his first solo release, an EP under the name Systems Officer on April 2004. I've heard it describe as a poppier Pinback but I wouldn't simplify it like that actually I would think its the opposite.

Systems Officer - Forever This Cyanide
Systems Officer - Hael
Systems Officer - Signature Red

Before Pinback Armistead Burwell Smith IV played bass in the band Three Mile Pilot.
The band's focal point is usually the deep, dark, dense bass work of ABS#4 (aka Zach)

Three Mile Pilot - On A Ship To Bangladesh

Then there is Rob Crow the other half of Pinback who has so many musical projects I doubt I know half of them.

Rob Crow - Some Things

The overriding quality of Thingy's music is the melody: beautiful, complicated, thoughtful melodies that float just above the surface of music that is sometimes sedate and sometimes seething.

Thingy - Mayday

Thingy - Plenty
Thingy - Revolution in a box

Then there is the whimsical Optiganally Yours, making 70s-influenced music with optigans
Optiganally Yours - Poodle Man
Opitganally Yours - Geppetto
Optiganally Yours - Nonpartisan

In practice, Heavy Vegetable’s music sounded more punkish, with a fractured pop aesthetic that brought the likes of Guided by Voices or the Archers of Loaf to the minds of some critics; early on, their music also bore the unmistakable influence of prog-punk outfits like Slint and Drive Like Jehu.-AMG

Heavy Vegetable - Dutch

Heavy Vegetable - Don't Mean Sh**

On October 25 2005 Goblin Cock is going to release there album Bagged and Boarded. Goblin Cock is Rob Crows metalish project on Absolutely Kosher.

Goblin Cock - Stumped

thats what I call cover art

Since its impossible for me to cover everything this page fills in the blank for Rob Crow

Alvin Row, an Animal Collective masterpiece

The Animal Collective released the double CD Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished/ Danse Manatee in late 2003. I'm an Animal Collective fan but I've never heard any material from this album so when I saw this track I said to my self, why not. Its a 12:41 song of hisses, piano and unconventional percussions. First it starts out with squeals, hisses and drums but don't let that put you off, once you hear the rest of the song you won't think of it as unnecessary and might even think of it as a vital part of the song. Its a crazy ride but its f**king beautiful.

Animal Collective - Alvin Row

buy it!

Metric and the Monster Hospital

Two albums I've been waiting for have finally leaked. Atmospheres new one, You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having and Metrics, Live It Out. I'm about 2 minutes away from Metrics new one and I've had the Atmosphere release for some time now.

Update: The Metric album is a little different, more rock than the previous effort, stream(rm) the new single from the album called Monster Hospital here.

Metric - Succexy
Metric - Combat Baby
Metric - Soft Rock Star (YSI link) This one is one of my favorites.

Of course Emily Haines is best known for Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl from the Broken Social Scene debut album. Speaking of the BSS...

KVRX Radio-Austin Texas 2003
Broken Social Scene - Stars and Sons
Broken Social Scene - 7/4 (Shoreline)
Broken Social Scene - New Country(?)
Broken Social Scene - Willie Nelson(?)
Broken Social Scene - Cause=Time

Between the bars

Elliott Smith - Between the bars (demo) I think this might be my favorite Elliott Smith song but there's a lot to choose from and its hard to pick.

Grant Buell - Between the Bars (ES pianofied instrumental cover)

Xiu Xiu covers the Pixies

Xiu Xiu - Gigantic (pixies cover)

This track is taken from the eighties project, which I can find little about but I do love this track.

Speaking of Pixies covers...

Teenage Fanclub - Here comes your man

edit: Okay after looking for some more information about this song I found one web page that mentions this song and said this is only Jaime Stewart from Xiu Xiu but then again I saw this on another web page with Xiu Xiu being credited. Its all the same to me.

Levee

There's lots of people coming to Dallas from New Orleans, some are actually staying here for good. This is crazyness, all this news totally went right past me. I knew there was a huricane coming and I knew it might hit the coast of Louisianna but thats as far as I knew. Then I was sitting in an office waiting for an appointment few days ago and I over heard something about a levee breaking and those were the only words that stuck out of the sentence. I sat there and thought for a while and laughed to myself thinking these two (desperate?) housewives I overheard were talking about the Led Zeppelin song. About 30 minutes later I walked by a newspaper stand and realized my stupidity. Its a good song though.
