Two New Belle & Sebastian tracks

The new Belle & Sebastian album The Life Pursuit leaked on to the internet very recently and I must say that I haven't heard a peep about it on the blog network until half the day was over. I haven't gotten a chance to listen to it completely as I'm on my way out but I will say I am enjoying these tracks very much.

Release Date: February 7, 2006

New songs by the Advantage and Two Gallants

There are few albums that I'm looking forward to next year and one of those is the new Two Gallants album. I've only heard a handful of songs by them and posted a few but I'm not sure what to expect on the album other than this one song that's been floating around the blogosphere lately. Its been getting a lot of rotation in my car.

Two Gallants - Las cruces jail

Also featured in Las cruces jail 7'” Single out on December 6, 2005

The Advantage, self proclaimed "8 BITNintendo band--serious dudes that rock with good nintentions", is coming out with a new album Elf-Titled for all you nostalgic video game nerds out there. One of my friends called their first album his favorite release of 2004 and I just looked at him puzzled because I really trusted his musical taste. I guess no one is perfect. I'm not saying its crap I just can't rank a covers album too high.

Okkervil River

Thanksgiving with the family was fun, I ate lots of food and drank lots of brandy. Good times. Seems like year end best of lists are starting to pop up on the music blogs, I organized mine and I'm currently waited for deployment a little closer to the end of the year. Till then check out this track from Okkervil Rivers Black Sheep Boy Appendix.

Okkervil River - No Key No Pan

The Capes

How lame does a band have to be to only post a "taster" or "snippets" of songs for their fans or future fans to listen to. I can't post a "taster", that's just not my style and no one jams to a "snippet". Free publicity 101: post at least one song and a bio/info on your band on your official website. I'm resourceful so before I gave up on The Capes I downloaded the album so I can have something to post. I'm sorry guys, you cornered me into it.

Before I go further, let me say that The Capes probably aren't lame, I know little about them from their lack of bio on their website so I shouldn't judge. They do however write catchy guitar'd indie rock laced with synthesizers and I can infer from random stuff I read about them that there is two songwritters since they are currently on an acoustic tour of the US with only two members present. But I could be wrong. Also I know there are 5 Capes, not the garment but the band, although having 5 garment capes would be nice. I can also infer that they are from the UK from their url ending with co.uk and the british accent but I am not a linguistic expert. According to their myspace page, they are from South London so I'm sure thats accurate but is mypace really a credible source?

Have a listen for yourself, they are climbing the charts and getting a lot of college radio play which should warrant some merit.

The Capes - Super Girls
The Capes - Mexican Broads

Their debut album Hello is now available along with their ep, both on Hard Soul Records.

Elk City

Elk City is not a magical land filled with Elks that I hoped for but instead they are an indie rock band that I never really noticed or cared about until I heard that former guitarist for Luna, Sean Eden had joined Elk City. So I downloaded a song and it wasn't too bad. The material out now has shared vocals with the guitarist Peter Langland-Hasssan and bass guitarist Renee LoBue but because Langland-Hasssans departure LoBue did all the vocals for their newest album New Believers out in 2006.

Edan's Beauty and the Beat

I got a recommendation from one of my friends who has an ear for good hip hop. He told me that lately he was listening to Edans Beauty and the Beat and said that it was his favorite hip hop release of the year. The first thing that I noticed when I heard this album was the production. It's unlike what you normally hear on a hip hop album released in 2005. His music as well as his production has a combination of old school and psychedelic which makes this album work as well as it does. The first single, Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme got me, it seeps into your brain with that hook and that voice. See for yourself:

Edan - Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme

The album'’s lead-single "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme", a track which true Hip-hop enthusiasts and historians will not only appreciate, but ultimately debate is a perfect sample of what "‘Beauty And The Beat"’ has to offer.

Comet Gain

Comet Gain are originally from the UK and are currently on the Kill Rockstars roster with a new album just released this month called City Fallen Leaves. I like the balance of male and female vocals in the track Just One More Summer Before I Go, I think that's what initially caught my ear. Apparently David Feck is the only original member of the band which the previous members formed Velocette and he brought CG to the US and to KRS with a new line-up.

ambient doom metal from Nadja

If you were to read a description of a band and it read "ambient doom metal", how would you stop yourself from investigating. Thats what happend when I read about Nadja's Truth Becomes Death. From this one song, I'd say more parts ambient than doom metal whatever that is. I think I like the classification better than the music. I read somewhere else where they are described as ambient-drone-metal, I guess everyones pretty sure about the ambient and the metal part, the drone vs doom is still out for debate. Hold up, I just read dronedoom at another place, that one sounds like the next possible project for MF Doom.

The end is near

I was hearing rumors for the past couple of days but it seems to me that Arrested Development is really going to get cancel. I normally don't get hooked on prime time television but this show was impossible to stay away from. The 3rd and final season has been cut from 22 episodes to 13 and will start airing again on December 5th. It just seems like Fox wants them to fail with these sporadic airings and the shifting time slots. I was happy when Sundays gave me Arrested Development and the Simpsons, the best combo ever. I really hope that they get picked up by another network. Arrested Development gets canceled and that piece of shit Stacked stays on air. How are shows like Trading Spouses and Reunion still on air? I love network television rational. I feel like punching a certain executive in the face.

Videos: Pinback, CocoRosie, Dirty 3 w/ Chan Marshall

I was browsing the Touch & Go website and found these. I would of pointed you to the Touch & Go video section but I didn't like the setup, a pop up comes up and you know the routine. I'm just picky.

Pinback - Fortress (via) This is my favorite of the three, it features a fantasy world with love and war between two fortress rulers, a unicorn and dancing. Not in that order.
mp3

Dirty Three with Chan Marshall - Great Waves If I were to hear this song without any introduction I would say it was from Chan Marshalls last album, You Are Free with the drums especially, not so much the layered guitars. I haven't listened You Are Free in a while but I have been listening to her new one, The Greatest. Its good but I wouldn't call it the greatest.

CocoRosie - Noah's Ark This the one song that I identify with when I think of CocoRosie. This videos theme is yet another fantasy world but this time without the storyline and more jumping.

Tristeza

Looks like Tristeza is back again to give us a healthy helping of instrumental rock. This time they are back without James LaValle on guitar, who I'm (and maybe you are) familiar with from the Album Leaf.

Their new album is called "A COLORES" - In stores Nov. 22. A colorful journey beyond instrumental post-rock, delving into the darker realms of modern psychedelia..... - according to Better Looking Records

From the new album A Colores
Tristeza - Bromas

Soft

Soft has new EP out titled the Soft EP which is self released and can be purchased at insound. I've heard most of the EP and I like what I hear. They have a definite Oasis sound comparison but I actually like it probably because of that wall of sound they're packing. If this EP is a sign of what's to come, I think I have a new album to look forward to.

Listen:
Soft - Higher

Ground Up Moonrocks

I found these Ali G video clips in an index, I don't have HBO or live in the UK so my exposure to Ali G is the various clips I see online.

Iron & Wine and Calexico Live at the Triple Door 10.22.05

I made a new banner just because I just finished taking a tough exam and naturally I was in lazy mode for the rest of the day. I made about 16 or so banners before I got tired and picked one that wasn't too lame. This should keep me happy for about a month or so.

I went to see Iron & Wine and Calexico last week and it was an amazing show. I was going to post pictures but I completly forgot. I do have something better though, a live EP of both bands performing together on October 22 at the Triple Door in Seattle, WA, a week before I saw them in Fort Worth.

Here's a little write up about the live ep:

IRON & WINE with CALEXICO
Live At The Triple Door 2005 [No label, 1CD]

To promote their new joint EP, In The Reins, both groups performed at the Triple Door in Seattle, WA, on Oct 22, 2005. An excellent performance with the covers being timely in tuning into the collective mood of America at war. Check out the horns which add a nice church-y touch to this laid-back sound. It's that old time division between rural life and urban rush. The iron backbone and the wine of leisure.

Lots of words, or Bar Fight, TV heads up, and two songs

I had a very nice weekend full of craziness. Friday we went to as my friends would say, "the most ghetto bar in Denton" after all the booze in our apartment ran low. It was shady but the drinks were cheap and I could play foosball in a lit room. While I was playing said foosball, I heard loud yelling but I was in the game so my surroundings didn't matter as much. But then yelling turned into 4 guys holding one girl back from beating up a large guy who just sat their and smiled like he was opening presents on his birthday. That passed, so I got focused again on the game and then I feel someone bumping against me violently so I stop playing to check it out. The bar fight that almost happen was happening 3 inches away from me. Girl bar fight though, lots of hair pulling and word play. So the bar shut down and we finished our drinks and left as the cops got there. While we walked out someone threw a stone at a cop and he drew out his gun and pointed it around. No one saw were it came from so they were pretty mad. Other than that, one of my friends got punched in the face, another got arrested, some homeless guy tried to get in my car randomly and I fell asleep with Meatloaf next to me. The food not the guy. That was just Friday, Saturday is when things got crazy.

Anyway it was an insane weekend which left me so out of it on Sunday to study for my test of Monday so I woke up way too early today. Damn Mondays.

Mondays just got better though, Arrested Development is back with new episodes finally. They were suppose to be back last Monday but they changed that and now today they are showing a full hour of AD. You know I'll be Tivoing recording with my VCR.

Dead Science - Dirty Magneto
"...abrasive, sometimes unsettling doses of avant classical, free jazz, and other musical esoterica...Combining the hyper-active looseness of improvised music with the economical arrangements of classic pop" - insound

Coach and Four - Girl Arms[ysi]
I swear this is the closest thing to Weezer you can get without actually being Weezer. If it were, it would definatley be Blue album era.

That was a lot of words, its that kind of day warranting that kind of post.

Z

The new My Morning Jacket album, Z took me by surprise. I wasn't that big of fan of theirs from the songs that I heard on their previous releases, so I didn't have high hopes. The first time played the album I was right about to give up on it till I got to track 4, What a wonderful man. My first thought was, that sounds like the Flaming Lips, then my next thought was if that was the one good track on there. It wasn't. I'm so used to albums that start off strong but then peter out towards the end, this one builds up. Z is a bit uneven at times but when it hits its stride, it does it well.

My 3 favorites from the album:
What A Wonderful Man
Off The Record
Anytime

Few Notes

I've been kicking back all day, right now with a Blueberry Pop Tart and some Moroccan Pomegranate Rooibos Tea. Thats usually my Tuesdays and Thursdays. So a lazy post today going along with a lazy day.

  • Music (For Robots) brings the goods, as they have been doing for a while, with something that was recently posted that caught my ear, Tapes 'n Tapes. I have a thing for songs with that sense of urgency.

  • A slew of Bloggers have posted on Hush records newest release by the Figurine like, Toothfairy. Check it here, here, here and here. Not bad.

  • Kevin Federline, Mr. Britney Spears has an album coming out and one of his tracks leaked. After a little searching I found it at wwtdd.com, check out. Everyone should listen to the "K-fed" track before forming an opinion. I'm not saying its good, my sentiments can be summed up by the title of the track, Ya'll ain't ready.

Blueprint

Blueprint is bringing 88 back. Well on his latest LP 1988 he is. Most everytime I get into a drunken discussion about underground hip hop this album always comes up and my reply has always been, "yea, I need to check that out". Well I did and now I'm here to give you the heads up.

Blueprint wrote, recorded and produced most of this album that brings back the old-school sound of the golden age of hip hop, 1988. Many of the tracks sample from many hip hop classics that I'm not going to pretend that I know but if something seems familiar thats why. This Rhymesayers release features an appearance on the track Lo-fi Funk, by one of my favorites in hip hop, Aesop Rock. Its one of my favorites on the album, with a very familiar sample loop that I can't put my finger on and some nice rhymes:

"I hate most commercial rap and the labels that are sellin it, almost as much as I hate the president, what kind of world are we livin in, when they kill Martin and Malcom but let this coward live, they killed Tupac forgot about Will Smith, they killed Biggie Smalls and left Durst with Limp Bizkit".

Another one of my favorites is the title track 1988, it has one of the best lines on the album:

You wanna playa hate, we can take it back to '88
My catalog is analog dog, all cassette tapes

Blueprint - Lo-Fi Funk
