K-Os

K-Os is hip hop by way of Canada. His album Joyfull Rebellion is one of my favorite hip hop albums and my love for his music has been renewed after I got a hold of his debut album. I'm really picky about the hip hop I listen to and K-Os is one of my favorites because of his orginality and his creativity. What I like most about K-Os is that he doesn't sit on one sound ( or genre) when he makes music.

Raised by Jehovah's Witness parents in locales as disparate as Toronto and Trinidad, it was no surprise that Kheaven Brereton, aka K-Os (pronounced: chaos) was a bit different than your average MC. A singer as well as a rhymer, and a producer to boot...

...this Canadian rapper puts a unique internationalist spin on contemporary rap. K-os is a skilled rhyme-slinger who openly loathes "bling rap"....

Bell X1

I heard this one song by Bell X1 last year and I couldn't stop listening to it for that whole month. Few days ago I got the album and must say that I am not disappointed. The album has some very good tracks and came to me highly recommended by few people. Also the word on the street is that the lame television show "The OC" featured Eve, the apple of my eye on an episode.

Electronic

I never realized how messed this website looked on IE. I can't figure out how to fix it either. Its all just the sidebar font being too small and some alignment. I think its my wing-it html skills that caused this problem. I created some odd things on the template to get a certain look but never looked at it on IE. I'm a Firefox man and if that goes down its Netscape both of which show this page as intended. I would care less but I saw that 45% of people who look at this page use IE 6.0, which is the majority. After all my exams are over and I find some time I'm going to have to work on this. Also Haloscan commenting messes up too much and few months after I put it up Blogger got a decent commenting system. The odd part is that more people comment on the Blogger commenting than Haloscan but I don't see how they do it. It routes to my email so I can keep track but I'm thinking about switching back so its shows up on the page. Seems like lots of work but school and this test I have in 4 hours is top priority right now.

Caribou

I just got back from my Political Sciences International Relations exam. I studied enough but there is always those questions where you think to yourself I didn't look at every detail when studying. The hardest part is this Game Theory bs. The diagram didn't really have to do with Political Science but there is a relation. Its just mental calculation of a word problem and then making charts and business strategies and fixed costs and on and on and on. Its easy but the instructor makes it so hard. Lot of people are dropping this class though, its kind of scary. The way I see it is that they payed for it and if they are going to drop now with an automatic fail they might as well get their moneys worth and maybe pull a miracle or just learn some more for when you retake the class. But thats easy to say. I can't do without my daily rant.

This past Saturday and Sunday have been all about Caribou. Not the animal but the music. I did some mp3 house cleaning in my music files and I found the new Caribou album I never listened to. Now its one of my favorites of this year.

Dan Snaith's Manitoba project is back with a new name but his hypnotic music hasn't changed. Caribou, like Manitoba, is still heavy on electronic jam sessions, with peculiar swirls of sound and stoned instrumental wanderings leading you who-knows-where.

Will Johnson is known for his consistently strong output with 3 [Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, and his solo] bands that he currently writes songs for. Originally from the city I reside in, Denton but now in Austin...that's where all the talent goes once they make a name for themselves [... see American Analog Set]. Great songs, great songwriter. I don't understand why they aren't bigger in the indie scene, they're so good. More about the band here

Last night

We had a hell off a time last night going to various bars down Fry Street. Every stop we had shots and we went to most every bar on one side of the street. I think the best part was after the bars close everyone kind of wanders around Fry Street and all the people are drunk so its a very friendly/crazy atmosphere. Stan knew all the bars and we just walked from his place. Before hand though we played some intense 21 basketball. I won one out of three games and almost took the last one but I missed one shot. I usually suck but I have these moments where everything just flows right and yesterdays game was that. Tonight I drive East.

Berlin Germany's Ellen Allien has new album Thrills, which came out earlier this month and I must say I'm impressed. She's at the top of her game with her groundbreaking albums, her reputation of being one of the best live DJ's, being an excellent producer, and her successfull record label, Bpitch Control. This is perfect long drive in the dark music.



I wish I could find something from Thrills but this is the best I got. If anyone wants more I can upload a track or two from the new one.

50 Coolest Websites 2005...according to Time. What was the critieria for this? It boggles my mind, I've only been to two of them and I invented the internet.

Did anyone read the new Time magazine, probably not but there was a long line at the grocery store and the issue is about the modern day China. This is a country the US should be watching. I'm not sure if the article talked about it but China is doing a massive military build up right now. The odd part is that they have no threats from anywhere. Chinas economy is booming mostly because of cheap labor and globalization. They make billions from the US consumer every year. Wal-Mart is a big reason for this. Alright thats enough of that. Read the magazine its a good feature.

How about the Spurs last night...!


San Antonio tightened its defense and held the visiting Pistons to 17 points in the fourth quarter to win the 2005 NBA Championship with an 81-74 victory on Thursday. Finals MVP Tim Duncan scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Spurs, who won their third title in the last seven years. Manu Ginobili added 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and Robert Horry chipped in with 15.

It's Thursday finally, my most favorite day of the week for this semester since its the furthest away from more class. I have exams Monday then Wednesday so this weekend will consist of lots of reading I hope and the usual shenanigans. I have a lot of time to do nothing which I'm not used to so I sit right were I am for long periods of time. I have plans for today but I'm out of food and very hungry so that makes me want to just sit here and think of a sollution to this problem. My conclusions require me to go outside and this heat isn't too welcoming being summer in Texas. It felt like it reached close to 100 degrees on my walk to my car. Such is the conundrum which is my life.

I missed Rilo Kiley on the Late Late Show, arg. I knew about it but I was watching the NBA Finals expecting the Spurs to take the game and drank some wine while watching and passed out early. Actually I went to lay down as they were playing on Craig Ferguson... I'm guessing. Then I also missed the Ravonettes on Carson Daly. Anyway today comedian Demetri Martin is going to be on the Late Late Show on CBS and The Futureheads on Jimmy Kimmel ABC. Thursday Ben Folds is going to be on Letterman. SNL is going to rerun the Will Ferrel episodes from very recently. Pretty good stuff. That's my TV notes for the week.

Today I went down to the ol' biblioteca and checked out some local (Denton) artists albums. I shall be enjoying Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, Little Grizzly and compilation of Denton music. The only reason I picked up the compilation is because there is a song by a guy name Corn Mo and the song is Denton Girls (update, its a new wave song?). Either its going to be really funny or lame because they are trying to be funny. I couldn't find the Baptist Generals which is surprising since they were from Denton.

Anyway that's todays rant.

Looks like the Smashing Pumpkins might be reuniting but there is another reunion that I care about much more, The Promise Ring are reforming for one performance. Hopefully this one off performance will turn into a permanent reunion. I used to listen to TPR in high school, back in the day when emo was something else. I know that none of the members have anything really big going on musically so a full reunion with new material might happen. Maybe.

The Promise Ring will reunite on stage to raise money for a Chicago charity.

Organizers of the Flower15 event announced the Minneapolis emo legends will reform for a set at Chicago’s Metro. While a date hasn’t been pinned down, yet, the event stretches from Nov. 8 to Nov. 15. The Promise Ring splintered in 2002, shortly after its Wood/Water(Anti) hit stores.

Oh yes good ole Mondays, the furthest day from the weekend. I did enjoy this past weekend very nicely. I helped my dad put up a fence up at my parents house which I consider my fathers day present to him. Then we had our usual fathers day backyard bbq. I even fit in the new Batman movie, Batman Begins. The guy playing Batman was kind of odd in that he had this one voice that he always used, kind of soft voice, holding back his real voice thing. Its kind of Keanuesque. It started anoying me after about an hour. George Clooney was a pretty good Batman they should of recast him. Anyway the movie was good, I like my super heros and Batman is up there on the list.

Spoon is coming to the Gypsy Tea Room [dallas] this Friday. They don't come around as much as I would of thought a Texas band would usually come around. Here is a live track from their very excellent Girls Can Tell.

I stumbled on Peachcake after I saw an awesome keytar picture of them playing live[below]. From Tempe, AZ comes the two-man electro-pop act known as Peachcake. They just won Arizona Infusion of Music Award's "Best Electronic" Act few days ago. Catchy, dancy, electronic, indie-rock. I don't want to throw a Postal Service reference so I won't. Lots of promise though.

Tempe, Arizona’s, Reindeer/Tiger Team mix of heartfelt songwriting and post-punk drumbeats.

I think the real talent in the band is the drummer. I wouldn't of downloaded their EP if its wasn't for the first time when I heard a song by them I just listened to the drums and wanted to hear more. I think with a good producer and a full band this band can make a great album.

For Real

My computer is lame. Its pretty good for today's technology, I have a fast processor, a good amount of ram, the video card is adequate, I have lots of hard-drive space and a nice collection of files. But then there comes these stupid little twitches my computer does. Like randomly it won't open any webpages like I have no internet connection but as soon as I restart I have access again. Right now I'm using Real Player as a browser because it seems to be the only thing immune to this. Sure I can restart and get Firefox/Netscape working but that's a lot of work. Yesterday I was moving files from one hard drive to another and my computer crashed repeatedly. Especially when I used winamp afterwards. But Realplayer is here to the rescue. Its no where near as good as winamp for audio or Firefox as a browser but it works. This post of music is dedicated to the under appreciated Realplayer, my favorite video player because it is so versatile, my to the rescue audio player and back up browser.

Q and Not U had Power that came out last year, it had this incredible song Wonderful People and I expected the whole album to sound like that and when it didn't I didn't give it a good listen. Eventually I listened to it again and realized they do have other great tracks in there. There is great energy on this album as with their others and it gets better everytime you listen to it.

Ogre You Asshole

I really don't know how I stumbled on this page but I found it and the music in the folder that read "1st demo cd-r". I laughed when I saw the band name "Ogre you asshole". Its a line from Revenge of the Nerds. I kind of panned them as another goofy band then I download a song and went on with my searches. Then the next day I started listening to the song and I like it and went back and downloaded the whole demo cd.

The band is Japanese, they sing in Japanese. That about all I know about them other than they have this one release. Their site is in Japanese but I translated it and got this much more;

This is great quality for a 1st demo released just on CD-R. They have some ties with K Records, I think they tour with artists on the label or are releasing in the Japanese affiliate. One song called Either Right Brain is so Sea and Cake instrumental wise. But the rest is just, I guess a Japanese take on American Indie. I like it.

When I first heard Black Sheep Boy by Okkervil River few months ago I declared it my favorite album of the year in my first listen. I have a particular affinity for bands that are from Texas but also bands that are from Texas and are really good. Great songwriter and great backing band.

Okkervil River seemed to come out of no where with this album, I've heard a few songs from other albums few years back but never really listened to them or never had anything good enough to turn me on to them but Black Sheep Boy did that for me. After hearing this album I had to hear the others in the back catalog which are great also but this to me is the best of their albums.

Eels

Class is going well so far because I haven't had any exams but that will change next week. I have to study really hard for my International Relations class. The bad part of it is my book hasn't come in the mail yet and I just dropped $124 skrillas on my Social Psychology book. On a good note the weekend just started and I kicked it off by walking around aimlessly around various buildings around campus and came home and made a grand sandwich, my stomach hasn't been this happy in a long time. The good life.

The Eels are basically one guy, E. He just released a 33 song double album this year which is his return to greatness after two lame albums. They (the previous 2) had few good songs but there were others on there that were less than what I expect from the Eels. Money Folder

I uploaded this Madvillain - Four Tet Remixes 12" EP for someone and posted it somewhere a while back and I realized everyone was posting the exact upload in random places. So after seeing it enough I thought I should post it on here. Its a limited press EP available on Stones throw records along with a companion EP with remixes of the same album.

I See Darkness

Throughout my years of listening to music I learned not to be scared of music. More specifically I learned to be more open minded towards musical genres. I love that look people give me when I say that a musician is folk or folkish, its like the kiss of death, atleast to the people I'm around. Years ago if I would of heard Will Oldham, I would of just panned him as another slow country-folk musician. When I was first introduced to Will Oldham I was told that he was Alternative-Country Rock. Then I was told that he sounded like Iron and Wine. He doesn't really sound like Iron and Wine but does have that indie-folk in him.

I See Darkness by Will Oldhams alias Bonnie Prince Billy is his masterpiece in my opinion. Its one of the best drinking by yourself albums. It was named Amazon.com's Best of 1999. I'm not that good with words so I'm going to let Amazon.com run with it (and plus I wrote a whole thing about this album and my browser crashed!)

Will Oldham has always threatened to make a completely devastating album and this is it....Oldham's forte, murder ballads, antispirituals, dead-sea chanteys, and lost-love songs, has always been "difficult," forcing the listener to confront some rather unseemly topics...Oldham is still singing about the blackness of his soul, but in between--in small bursting moments--there are bits of light, hope, and a suggestion that maybe--just maybe--there may be redemption through love. That message, presented in these carefully constructed, gently offered songs, pushes this recording beyond the usual, curious appeal of Oldham and into an entirely new realm of greatness.

This year he released his critically acclaimed Superwolf a collaboration of Bonnie "Prince" Billy and Matthew Sweeney which is great but not as great as I See Darkness. No Surprises

Since a new Radiohead album won't be out till next year;

According to the fan site GreenPlastic.com, Radiohead will complete recording their new album by December, with plans for a release date in February or March 2006. Currently, Radiohead are working on 15 songs with two described as "already done and amazing." Recording for the follow-up to 2003's Hail to the Thief commenced back in January in which frontman Thom Yorke played new songs for the rest of the band, who then contributed their own parts to them. While in keeping with Radiohead's oft-collaborative spirit, the seventh album's recording process, however, is said to be "unorganized" and markedly divergent from past practices.

Madvillain - Money Folder(Four Tet Remix) This track is so good. MF Dooms and Madlibs Madvillain getting the remix treatment from Four Tet. The EP has some very very very nice remixes including this one.

More Parts Per Million

I finally have a record player and this weekend I finally got a chance to play my Thermals LP I won in a Sub Pop contest few years back. I can't remember what I did to win it but I'm sure it wasn't much because I don't usually win anything so I have no motivation do put forth effort to do so. I won their debut More Parts Per Million and since then they released another album Fuckin' A both nice three chord punk albums on Sub Pop. I think Amazon.com sums them up pretty nicely;

Since so much three-chord punk has gotten stale, this Portland, Oregon trio often strips down to just two chords--which makes those moments when they do splurge on that third precious bundle of notes staggeringly climactic. The Thermals have just one basic melody, but it's a great one, and like the finest bluesmen, their brilliance is in the variations they work over these standard changes. Except these variations aren't solos--they're gradations of emotional tone and feedback burst and Hutch Harris' clearly enunciated rants

Summer school again

It was a pretty nice weekend but today the new semester starts after a 3 day break from the previous and so far I have gone to International Relations a Political Science class and then tonight I have Social Psychology and Behavior a Sociology class. The Political Science class seems really hard and the instructor started the class with a 10 minute speech on how the class is hard and you should drop it, I won't get my feelings hurt if you leave right now, I'm not scared to give out D and F, I don't take it easy during the summer and if you don't want to jeopardize your GPA drop this class now. It sounds like its going to be fun. Yea...

Last nights show

I saw The Faint today [well yesterday I guess]with Bright Eyes and Airborn Audio at the Nokia Center. It was a nice show indeed. I walked in at the end of hip hoppers Airborn Audio's set which sounded good from the 2 songs I heard. It seems that more shows I go to lately have a younger crowd, then I realized they were the same age but I was older. Its cool though because I don't look as old as I am.

The Faint played a really good set. Everyone was dancing and the sound was great, they got the crowd really into the music. Bright Eyes took the stage with a full band including members of The Faint, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and some other regulars for Bright Eyes' touring band. At first I was surprised to see Nick Zinner from the YYY's but then I remembered he played some guitar on the Bright Eyes album so it made sense. I think at most there were 10 people on stage playing. The string section [2 people] sounded great with the Faint and Bright Eyes. I recognized a handful of songs but only really knew three of them, Take it Easy, Neely O'hara and Lover I don't have to love. I really wished I brought my camera, I rushed out of my apartment and realized it wasn't with me when it was too late.

I was really pleased with The Faints set which they played all that I wanted to hear. They were the best performance of the night.

Outer Banks

Last night I lay down to catch a little television and I feel asleep really early then woke up at 5a and tried to go to sleep. I gave up a little before 7a and declared it a new day. That is how I celebrate the end to my 3 week semester by sleeping earlier than I ever have since ....ever. So far I drove around randomly, went to a park, listened to some tunes and downloaded tried to download some music.

I found Punk-O-Rama 10 to download and I said why not, I don't listen to that much "punk" anymore, I should wet my ears. Damn has punk gone down the drain. Atleast in the Epitaph side of things. I haven't skipped over that many tracks on one release ever before. There are three good tracks out of 26 all three hip hop. I put one on the list because the lyrics make me laugh. "I'm here to laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor". The track sounds so G-Funk, you know the sound of Dr. Dre's first album.

I missed LCD Soundsystem on Letterman but damn what a performance. Yes the lovely internet has got my back check it out here. They played a shorter version of daft punk is playing at my home. It sounds great live, pure partying music.


Album Leaf - Outer Banks This is my favorite song of his Sub Pop debut In A Safe Place. I tried to record this on my phone when I saw them live but my phone doesn't record too well. Great show though.

Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground Great song, great band name, great voice. What else do you want!

Right Said Fred - I'm Too Sexy This is my lame song of the day post, I want you to download this, burn it on a cd, take it to your car, put all your windows down, and drive around town with this on high volume. I'm sorry I'm not cool enough to do it so I want to see other people doing it.

Coheed and Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade I know one person who reads this will appreciate this album.

Karate Kid - OST Oh yes, this is the album you didn't know you wanted but you know you do. First it starts with, "maybe I'll listen to one track", then the next thing you know you have it on full blast singing your the best around. If anyone dogs this album I will fight you, that is no lie.


This cd cover shows the scene right after Mr. Miyagi confesses his love for Daniel son and they move close for the climax of the film, their first kiss.
